My parrot has black bruising after laying eggs. Is it serious?

Hello! I am sorry Sky had a problem passing her egg. In the photo it looks very possible that she has a prolapse and should see a vet. If left untreated a prolapse can dry out, bleed, and become infected. It can also make her unable to pass another egg. It can be normal for a bird to bleed with passing stool a couple times after laying but this far out is abnormal. Ouch! It looks like the egg may have been a bit large and caused some discomfort, or was just produced too quickly. If she is otherwise acting normal, keeping an eye on her is best, however if she is actively bleeding or appears in distress/unable to defecate properly, it is best to seek veterinary care immediately.

Palpate her abdomen as she could be egg bound. Provide a warm environment in the 80-85 F range. Very dark green feces is usually anorexia but black feces is melena (digested blood) and needs veterinary attention. A dog/cat vet might be you're only choice. It is possible that Angie had trauma to her leg. If she did get soft tissue injury this usually resolves with time. However a bruise can also be due to a fracture, bleeding issue or infection. I would recommend taking her to a vet to determine the cause of the bruise and also start her on pain medication for better control of pain/comfort.

By the time the ova leaves the ovary, it usually takes around 48 hours for place all the layers not he egg (yolk, albumen, membranes and shell). The shell is placed on the last 8 hours and the timing is so the egg is laid early in the morning. She should have laid the egg before dawn. You can try placing her in the warm steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes to see if that helps to stimulate uteirne contractions and egg laying. If not she should really see a veterinarian today as there is a risk of the egg adhering to the uterine wall, and rising complications. Good luck.

Blue and Gold Macaws typically lay a clutch of 2-3 eggs, so she may be working on a second egg. If she will allow, soak her in a warm Epsom salt bath deep enough to submerge her vent. Do this for 30 minutes if she will allow. Afterwards, gently apply a tiny bit of olive oil around her vent to ease laying.
