My pet store parakeet sleeps a lot and has weird poop. Is it sick?

There is a parakeet (budgie) at a local pet store. The bird appears to sleep a lot ( 3 of the 4 times I’ve been there he was sleeping while all the others were up and alert). The 4th time I saw him he was sitting by himself near the light. When I took him out he pooped on me twice and it looks white and milky with a dark spot. I’m hesitate to to bring a sick bird home with me (I have a dog). What could be wrong with the bird and how should I proceed

Thank you for your question, and thank you for being concerned about this bird. It is very kind of you. I am wondering, if you haven't brought it to the attention of the pet store staff, I would recommend starting there. I would agree that I don't think that it is a great idea to bring a sick bird home with you, especially into a situation that can be stressful for some birds (even if a dog is very nice, they can be very scary to a bird of this size). And with non-specific signs of abnormal droppings and sleeping a lot, there are numerous things that could be going on.
I would recommend bringing the bird's state to the attention of the pet store, and hopefully they will have it evaluated. There are many pet stores who work directly with veterinarians to treat the animals that reside at their stores, and when the animals are feeling better, they can then go to a new home.
I hope that gives you a place to start, and I hope that you are able to help this little bird feel better!

Thanks for reaching out about Kiwi. A damage flight feather should not alter flight significantly, as they can fly when they molt. Lethargy and sleeping during the day (to conserve energy) are clinical signs of being sick, the question is why. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Monitor fecal production by a total cage clean-out. Sick birds often act like they're eating but aren't. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Multiple possibilities include ingestion of foreign material (metal, fabric, wood, etc.), metabolic concerns (liver, renal), infections (viral, bacterial) and others. Good luck.

Hi. I'm sorry Paco isn't feeling well. Hiding their beak in thier feathers and sleeping a lot is definitely a sign of a sick bird. Because birds are prey species they often hide signs of illness for a long time before it's noticeable. Make sure Paco is in a warm, quiet, draft free area so as not to stress him more. I would find an avian veterinarian to take him to immediately. If he's swollen he may have fluid buildup, a tumor or other internal disease going on. Sick, stressed birds can die very easily unfortunately so be as gentle and stress free with handling and transport as possible. Until you get him seen, keep him in a warm quiet location and try to tempt him to eat- either his regular diet or pieces of rice or pasta, fresh fruit or veggies. Good luck to you and Paco.

Hi! Sleeping with head bent down or under a wing can be normal. However, if Prince is more lethargic and sleeping more than normal, I would agree that he could be sick with an infection or some other illness. therefore, I would recommend you take him to see a veterinarian since birds can get seriously ill very fast. Your vet will be able to do an exam and recommend any tests or treatments that are necessary. Good luck!

Poor little birdie! What a cutie too. It is quite possible he could have some dehydration or loss of energy due to his excursion, or could have become injured or caught some illness. If his lethargy continues, he seems to be sneezing frequently, he isn't eating well, or he seems puffed up/hunched over or is sitting on the floor of his cage then I would bring him into the vet for an examination.

Young birds will often sleep in the position described. The shaking could be due to chill. baby birds need to be kept warm until they are totally feathered. The loose droppings could be due to parasites or infection. It is unfortunate you were sold such a young chick. A reputable breeder or store will not sell a chick that is not weaned and eating on its own. Without more information, such as species, it is difficult to give more specific advice. You may need to hand feed the chick to supplement the diet if it won't eat. If you have never done this, contact an experienced vet or breeder to show you how it is done. An exam with an experienced avian veterinarian would be recommended anyway since the chick is a "new" pet. An exam may confirm good health or it may diagnose any pre-existing conditions which can then be treated appropriately.
