How to tell if your parakeet is male or female by cere color?

How can I tell if my baby parakeet is a boy or girl (the green one I had for four years but I still want to be sure of her gender)And is the blood feather on the yellow one okay since it is not bleeding and is dried up?

Male parakeets have a Blue cere while the cere of females is brown to yellow. However, the color change does not occur until adolescence or adulthood. You may need to wait a while before you are able to definitively determine the gender of your parakeet.

There were no additional picture attached of your yellow parakeet so it is not possible to comment on the status of the blood feather. However, in general if the blood feather is not actively bleeding, there should be no real concern. However, you may want to consult with a veterinarian who is familiar with working with birds to make sure that there are no other concerns.

It's not possible to know until they are about one year of age, by then the cere color will change, On a female parakeet, the cere can range from a white or light blue color to a pale tan. When the female is ready to mate, the cere may become a dark brown and become flaky. On a male parakeet, the cere is blue or a purplish-blue color.

I believe Storm is a girl! The boy parakeets have a blue cere (the area around the nostrils). Any bird without a blue cere is either an immature bird (male or female), a female, or a male that has a tumor of the reproductive system that has altered hormone levels (since hormones are what make the blue color).

You'll need to wait until they are at least 8-12 months old before accurately determining gender. Males will have a blue or purple hue to the cere (nose) and females will have a more flesh colored cere.

Both your birds look pretty young still! Cere color changes are normal as parakeets reach sexual maturity. Females will typically get a pinkish or brownish cere when they are ready to breed, while makes will often get a deep bluish cere. Younger birds can have a mix of colors that will deepen/change as they become mature. As for taming, if you find they have a favorite treat, such as a piece of fruit or spray of millet seed, etc, you can use this to help them get used to you. Every time you approach their cage, you can offer a bit of treat until they are comfortable having you around. From there, you can move onto offering the treat to be taken from your hand, and then work up to petting or even handling them, each time offering a treat. If they become too nervous or upset, simply go back to the previous step they were comfortable with and try again from there.

It looks like Ruby is pretty young, and it is hard to determine sex in young birds. If the cere is turning pink, brown, or crusty, Ruby could actually be a female that is becoming sexually mature. If the cere becomes very deep blue, that is usually the sign of a mature/active male. However- in some color variations cere color doesn't always indicate sex correctly. If the brown is separate from the cere, is discharge, or you're seeing any signs of illness, then this could indicate an issue such as a respiratory infection which should be checked out by your vet.

Why is my budgie's cere changing color? Is it male or female?

Thank you for the additional pictures! I see what you mean about the purple coloration around the top of the cere (around the nostrils). Just below the nostrils, there looks to be a darker rim - as mentioned before, this looks like it may be starting to turn brown. Typically when we see male budgies start to turn colors, that it is more of a true blue color initially and not as much of a purple color. Based on this, I still think that Snowflake is mostly likely female. Thanks again for the additional photos!
