Why is my parakeet lethargic, fluffy, quiet, and on cage bottom?

Hello, I would recommend taking Ollie into his veterinarian for a check up. Birds often hide illness until it is very severe, so even a mildly quieter bird may be a very sick one. They will likely recommend bloodwork and x-rays to start investigating possible causes of illness. A more fluffed up appearance is usually symptomatic of high temperature which can cause lethargy as well. High temperature is usually caused by an infection which is very often of respiratory origin. Pepe is showing signs of illness. In birds hiding and lethargy are fairly nonspecific signs of illness. But by time a bird starts showing signs of illness they are often seriously sick. Birds are prey animals so use a lot of strength trying to hide signs of illness. Please get Pepe to an avian vet asap. This website may help you find one of you don't have one. Lethargy and sleeping during the day (to conserve energy) are clinical signs of being sick, the question is why. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Monitor fecal production by a total cage clean-out. Sick birds often act like they're eating but aren't. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Multiple possibilities include ingestion of foreign material (metal, fabric, wood, etc.), metabolic concerns (liver, renal), infections (viral, bacterial) and others. Good luck.

Differentials are many, from gastrointestinal diseases (infection/inflammations often dietary related) to any disease that can spread systemically (causing lethargy for example or fever - which is typical with ''fluffy coat'') like infection, and anything that can cause pain/discomfort. The approach must be logic, starting from offering different kind of food. A check up is needed if inappetence lasts for more than 24hours.
