My parakeet flew into something hard and is bleeding. Will it live?

If Kara has been bleeding from the mouth and it is not stopping after several days, it is best to seek veterinary care immediately. It's possible there could be something in her mouth or throat that has caused injury and bleeding, there is a GI issue causing her to bring up blood, or there is something in her nose/mouth such as a growth or tumor that has burst and is now bleeding. A complete exam is needed to try and find the underlying cause. If she is currently housed with other birds, it is a good idea to move her to a separate hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water. Until you can get to your vet, it is best to keep him in a warm cage separated from any other birds, and to clean up any blood or wounds with a clean washcloth. If he begins to act ill or the bleeding is unable to be stopped, seeking veterinary care immediately is needed.

If the skin is broken and bleeding, Lemon Drop is at risk for infection. Even if you have no local avian veterinarian, a small animal vet should be able to treat her. A specialist can be consulted online or by phone. The antibiotics and medications used are similar, just the dose is much smaller. A small e-collar (cone) may need to be fashioned to prevent her from plucking. In the meantime, lean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Use paper towels on the cage bottom and change them daily to keep the cage clean. Provide a variety of toys and treats to keep her distracted from picking. Bathe or mist her with warm water a few times a week to promote preening and healthy skin and plumage.
