Why is my old budgie's eye closed and cloudy? What should I do?

Hello, my parrot(budgie) has eye problem.one of his eyes has been closed for couple days now and he opens it rarely for just a second..I'm worried what if his hurting. I tried to examine his eye but didn't see anything, except of MAYBE it's kinda lightened.. the part that should be absolutely black.. like cataract or something, I'm not sure though.. I haven't noticed this before.. could it be cause of age? He's quite old guy.. Why would he keep it closed if it doesn't hurt? Thanks in advance.

If the eye is bad enough that your budgie is keeping it closed, or if it looks cloudy or glazed over, it is best to seek veterinary care. While a cataract is possible in an older bird, injury or infection to the eye can also cause cloudiness, closing of the eye, or even debris to ooze from it, and should be treated so the eye is not lost or the infection doesn't spread. Keeping your budgie comfortable, eating, drinking and resting until you can get to your vet is best.

If you use bedding such as sawdust or shavings in the bottom of the cage, it can kick up dust that may cause irritation, so switching to paper towels or newspaper on the base of the cage may help reduce any dust that is worsening the issue until you can see your vet.

Why is my budgie weak, eyes closed, and sitting at the cage bottom?

Those are general symptoms that Bibbie is not feeling well and may have an underlying illness. It would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP as this is a symptom of many possible issues and an exam is needed to help narrow down the cause. Until you can get to the vet, moving her to a warm hospital cage with easy access to food and water may help, however if she is completely listless seeking care is needed ASAP.

Ideally, she should be examined by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating birds. If she is in with other birds, remove them to a different cage in case the injury was due to aggression. Check the cage for anything on which she could have injured herself. Monitor for lethargy, loose droppings or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that need to be addressed by a veterinarian.

The discoloration around the eye is probably from the excessive tearing. Since you are unable to take him to the vet try flushing the eye with a sterile saline solution and using a humidifier in the room to help in case it is allergies. Best of luck. Why is my budgie picking feathers and has closed or squinting eyes?

These signs could be compatible with a mites infestation and possibly an upper respiratory tract infection/inflammation. Eyes squinting could be related to it as well as consequences of conjunctivitis or tear duct inflammation. I would recommend a check up to determine underlying cause of it and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed.
