My new 5-month-old cockatiel won't eat or drink. What should I do?

Hi I brought a new cockatiel home yesterday and he hasn't eaten or drank anything since, i tired hand feeding, but he just keeps on jumping all over the cage and runs away from my hand. His about 5-6 months old. What can i do

Thanks for reaching out again .If not used to hand feeding, they will rarely take it at this age. If different from the food offered at the pet store, contact the store for the same food. Provide heat support in the 80-85 f range can give some comfort.

Thanks for reaching out about Loopi. A veterinary visit is definately recommended but if not available, providing heat support in the 80-85 F range might give some support. Hand or syringe feed as needed, as mal nutrition can lead to weakness. Seed is not a complete diet, vegetables and a protein source are needed. If this bird was originally hand feed, return to that. Don't forget to offer water.

It is possible your bird is eating and drinking while you aren't watching. He may be nervous in his new environment and feel uncomfortable eating while you are around. Be sure he is in a quiet environment where he can be left alone for periods to adjust to his new life. Ideally, Pedro should be physically examined by a veterinarian. If an avian vet is not available, see the local veterinarian. He or she can contact an avian specialist by phone or online. Place him in his own cage or remove the chicken chicks. It isn't recommended to keep these two species caged together. Offer a mash made with warm water and a handfeeding formula to get him eating. Unflavored PediaLyte can be given via dropper if he will accept it. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor.

Help! My cockatiel chick stopped eating hand-fed food from syringe.

If you attached photos, they didn't go through with the question, so I can't see them! You are welcome to ask again with photos attached. If Buddy is of the age where you can start weaning her, you may want to start offering regular food in addition to syringe feedings to see if she is interested. If she seems very ill, becomes lethargic, or won't eat anything offered to her at all, seeking veterinary care to rule out any health issues is a good idea.

Without knowing how long you've had your bird, it would be hard to give more tailored recommendations. Birds can be very picky and afraid of new things at first, especially if you've recently purchased it. I would continue to offer a variety of items to let your bird get used to seeing them, etc, and give it a chance to finally sample some. Be sure to pick up anything spoiled and keep trying!

Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range for aid. Lethargy and conjunctivitis are possibly chlamydophilosis, which is potentially contagious to humans. Isolate from other birds. Good luck.
