Why does my lovebird yell so much? Is he bored, stressed, or sick?

Our lovebird keeps on yelling even when he's not alone in the room. He has food and water but still yells and it's quite irritating. Is he alright?

Kiki may be bored, stressed or ill. Provide more interaction and attention if possible. Birds are flock animals and although some are fine alone, others may need "company". This extra attention could be from human or avian companionship.
Rearrange the cage to provide enrichment. Switch out old toys for new toys, provide different sized perches and offer a variety of foods for him to forage.
Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, loose droppings or sitting quietly with eyes closed and feathers puffed out. These can be signs of illness requiring an exam with an experienced avian veterinarian.

Those are all very common signs of general illness in birds, so if the behavior continues or has been ongoing, it would be best to bring Grassy to your vet for an exam. In the meanwhile, keeping him in a warm hospital cage away from other birds and with easy access to food and water may help keep him comfortable.

Thanks for reaching out about Kiki. Could he have ingested something that was not food? Sounds like he is sick and trying to vomit. Metabolic diseases (liver, kidney, pancreas) can also cause nausea. A veterinarian probably needs to be visited soon, as small birds have few caloric reserves.

If he seems to have night frights at night even when covered, placing a nightlight nearby may help him settle and relax overnight.

Have Elmo examined by an experienced avian veterinarian to diagnose illness or infection. This can include malnutrition, parasites, viral infection or skin infection. Once medical causes have been ruled out, you can focus on behavioral causes for the feather picking. Elmo could be stressed by your absence if he was bonded to you. He may be bored in his cage or it could be too small. Consider a larger cage and rotate perches and toys to keep him engaged. More human interaction is also a necessity, especially if he was hand raised.

Noticed you posted twice so I'm reposting my answer her to make sure you get it. It's possible Kicolina might be wishing for a mate. If she seems down, adding in a toy that she can snuggle against such as a soft nest or preening toy, or even adding in one of the little "fake" parakeets that sing may help her feel a bit more comfortable. Interacting together and offering her some favorite treats may also help. If she continues to act depressed, or shows any signs of illness, a vet checkup is always a good idea to rule out any health issues.
