My Indian ringneck laid eggs without a mate. Should I remove them?

My Indian ringneck is laying eggs without a mate. What should I do with the eggs? Do I let her sit on them for a while or do I take them away straight away.?

If you are not planning on mating her you really should try and stop her from even laying the eggs in the first place. She will lay eggs as long as she has nesting material to do so. The best thing you can do is take her nesting papers (or whatever material she is using) out of the cage. Letting a bird lay eggs without a male could be dangerous for her. Things to be worried about would be egg binding and depleting her calcium.

You don't have a male so of course the eggs will be infertile. If you take the eggs away soon after she has laid them she will immediately go back into laying mode so that is not recommended. I would say wait about 3 weeks before removing the eggs.

You can remove it or leave it in there for a few days. Some birds may be broody at first and she may not want you to take the egg. It won’t hurt her to lay in it for a couple days. All female birds will lay eggs even if there is not a male present. These eggs are not fertilized so throwing them away is fine. Removing the nest and current eggs won't replenish any currently lost calcium, but it may discourage Phoebe from laying more. If she doesn't have a mate, the eggs aren't viable and should be removed anyway. If you suspect she may lay more eggs, adding in a calcium supplement such as oyster shells or a cuttlebone (you can also use cooked eggfood, there are lots of recipes online) can help replenish calcium in addition to feeding her regular diet.

My condolences on the loss of your male budgie. Do not throw the egg away without replacing it. This may spur her to lay more. You can replace the egg(s) with dummy eggs. Find them in the Avian section of the local Petco. Leave the dummy eggs in the nest box for 2-3 weeks, then remove one every few days until none remain. Hens will lay eggs regardless of whether or not they mate. To stop egg laying, limit exposure to daylight (use a cage cover or move them away from windows, light sources, etc.) and lower room temperature by a few degrees. To prevent mating, you will need to separate males from females.
