Why is my Indian Ringneck parrot's beak not as red as before?

The beak grows from the base and deep, therefore outer layers at the end of the beak are the oldest and last to wear off. As the keratin thins, the keratin becomes more clear. Keep monitoring. Without seeing a photo it is hard to tell what you are describing. Normal aging can cause the beak to change color as a bird matures. Injuries to the beak may cause bruising or discoloration, malnutrition or other illnesses may also cause beak color changes. If you're seeing any other signs of illness, it is always best to seek veterinary care to have the beak looked at and determine if it is an issue.

Beak color changes can occur as a bird ages. If Mr Splitz is otherwise acting normal and healthy, this color change could be normal. If you're seeing any signs of illness, bruising, pain, changes in eating habits, etc, then it could indicate the beak was injured and should be checked out by a local vet.

Making sure Kiko is on a diet that is formulated for parrots can also ensure he's getting the right nutrients. You can offer fruits and vegetables as extras, but a balanced diet is needed for optimal health.

If you're seeing discoloration or growth on the beak itself or Rj is acting ill (not wanting to eat or drink, trouble breathing or eating, listless behavior, etc) in addition to the change, it would be smart to have a vet take a look to rule out any issues such as a bacterial or fungal infection causing it. Some foods and pellets can also cause staining of the beak or feathers, so checking to see if any fruits or vegetables given match the discoloration may alert you to what is causing it so you can remove it and offer other items in addition to her regular diet.

Thanks for reaching out. Diet can have an affect on pigments of the plumage. An only seed diet lack multiple vitamins, minerals and nutrients, and is a poor diet.
