Poor Violet! Some crusting around the nose and a sudden cere color change can indicate the possibility of an infection going on, especially if there is discolored discharge or crusting stuck to the nose. Cleaning the nose and removing any debris may make things more comfortable for Violet, however if it returns or she begins to show signs of illness, having a vet take a look is best. They may need to flush the nostrils of any debris, or start Violet on an antibiotic or fungal medication to resolve the issue.

Typically this is seen in female parakeets that are ovulating and the cere becomes hyperkeratotic (thickened scales). If this is a male and the cere USED to be blue and now tan/brown, there is a concern that a testicular tumor is producing estrogen, therefore thickened cere. Mites are possible but usually does not appear like this. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess health. Good luck.

It is not uncommon for older male parakeets to have testicular tumors that produce estrogen, thereby cere changes color as if a female. Unfortunately the photo is not very useful to see the problem. I cannot see it very well. Maybe you can take close up photo and upload it. Please do not use tea tree oil on your bird. Many birds cannot metabolize it correctly and the metabolic break-down products are toxic. From what I can see your budgie may be suffering from hypertrophy of the cere. This occurs in many types of chronic ill health. It is important to find and treat the underlying cause. The cere should be treated also: You can pick away the heaped-up material and applya little oily lotion. The growth can sometimes be caused by mites or tumours. Therefore I suggest you take have your budgie seen by a veterinarian (preferably an avian vet).
