My female budgie's nose bled. Why is her cere dark and flaky now?

Poor Violet! Some crusting around the nose and a sudden cere color change can indicate the possibility of an infection going on, especially if there is discolored discharge or crusting stuck to the nose. Cleaning the nose and removing any debris may make things more comfortable for Violet, however if it returns or she begins to show signs of illness, having a vet take a look is best. They may need to flush the nostrils of any debris, or start Violet on an antibiotic or fungal medication to resolve the issue.

It also sounds like she is straining with difficulty defecating, possibly egg bound. A veterinary visit is recommended as this can become serious and possibly fatal. Female budgies will have a bit of a color change to the cere (colored part above their beak) when their reproductive status changes. it is likely to be a bit brighter or pinker when ready to mate (IE before laying eggs), and then may become more brownish in color when done (IE after laying eggs). As long as she is otherwise acting healthy and normal, this is nothing to worry about. However, if you are seeing any behavioral changes or she appears ill along with the change, it is always best to have a vet take a look.
