Are sunflower and budgie seeds okay for degus? What should they eat?

I have had two female degus for about 3 years now and haven't usually had any problems with what I'm feeding them, but due to a communication error I have ended up with sunflower seeds and budgie seeds (as shown in the photo) and was just wondering whether they are ok to feed to degus or if I should stay clear of them and get some different feed for them. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your question about your degus, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. I would not recommend feeding either of these products to degus, as they can lead to dental disease and gastrointestinal distress. Degus are meant to have a high fiber, low nutrient diet, so the majority of their diet should be hay. You can also provide them with a small amount (approximately 1 tablespoon/degu/day) of chinchilla pellets, which are typically alfalfa based. In addition to this, you can also add dark leafy greens (approximately 1 cup/degu/day). Examples of these include leaf lettuces, cilantro, parsley, arugula, dandelion greens. I do not recommend feeding any dairy, sugar, fruits, muesli, or seeds to degus.

Thanks for reaching out about Fluff and including photos. Peanuts and other seeds are not healthy, too high in fat and low in nutrients. Pellets can be used as a supplement, but free choice to a good quality hay (timothy, not alfalfa) is the primary diet for guinea pigs. Since their teeth (incisors and cheek teeth) grow throughout life, hay is helpful on wearing the teeth down as it requires lots of chewing. It is also low in calories, which is good. The diet can be supplemented with 1/4 c of fresh vegetables. Good luck.

Can finches and budgies safely eat green chiretta leaves and fruit?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I do not recommend feeding such plants to finches or budgies as they may be toxic. Finches and budgies can eat a commercially available seed or pelleted diet (found in most pet stores or on the internet). Thanks for reaching out about Rangu. This depends on the type of bird. If we are discussing a parrot (lovebird to macaw), seeds are a poor diet, as is very hight in fat and low in vitamin/minerals. The diet should consist of a wide variety of vegetables, a proteins source such as beans/legumes, cooked carbohydrates as an energy source, and avian pellets. Good luck.

It is not necessary to provide fruit and veggies daily as these are considered enrichment, and not necessary for nutritional requirements. Keep in mind that budgies tend to be neophobic, or do not like new things in their environments, so they may not respond well to new food items. What should I feed my new bird? Seeds, pellets, fruits, and veggies?

Hello again! These items look great for King, but the bag is correct - generally, parakeets and parrots should be fed a pellet-based diet to avoid fatty liver disease. Seed diets are high in fat (even without the sunflower seeds), so should be given as a treat supplementally only. Millet should also be given in moderation. Your bird can definitely have fruits, but include some veggies, too! Grapes, apple, banana, broccoli, kale, green beans, and peppers can be great for birds. Avoid avocado, apple cores/seeds, cherries (with seeds - seedless are ok) onion, and garlic. Dried fruits are ok too, just avoid the ones that have added sugar. I hope this helps! My bird refuses fruits/veggies after a sunflower seed diet. Help!

Thanks for reaching out about Akio. You are correct in that sunflower seeds and corn are a terrible diet for birds, the equivalent of drinking cooking oil and eating white bread. No vitamins, minerals, protein and other essential nutrients. Try measuring what you place in the bowl every morning, say 4 tablespoons. The next morning, same time, measure what is left over, say 2 tablespoons. Therefore he is consuming 2 T a day. Offering 1 tablespoon in morning, and one in early evening. In a second bowl, offer human food (vegetables, some fruit, pasta, beans, whatever). Eating your food in front of him, offering by hand or visualize you placing in the food bowl. Give it time. Trust and persistence is the issue. Good luck.
