Why is my conure tapping his beak on hard surfaces? What does it mean?

It's possible they are trying to interact with you. Signs of aggression/territorialness may include loud screaming, hissing, attempting to bite, wing flapping, etc in an attempt to get you to move away. If they are nicely interacting with you and then going to the toy and still interacting in a positive manner, then it may be they want to play. Offering a toy or treat from your hand may help encourage healthy bonding.

This can be normal parrot behavior. They may flap and vocalize if happy, or communicating with thier "flock" which may be their human. They may also vocalize as mating behavior. Hello there! This is most likely a normal stretching/preening behavior for Buddy. On the top side of the base of the tail, there is a small, oil-filled sac called the uropygial gland. When a bird grabs the base of the tail at that location, it is usually to get a small amount of that oil on the beak, and then they use it to coat the feathers. This makes the feathers more water-resistant. This could be what he is up to, but if he seems at all uncomfortable, I recommend bringing him to an avian vet for evaluation. It's unlikely that this positioning is any more than stretching and/or preening, but you know your bird best! Good luck, and I hope that little Buddy continues to thrive! He's a beautiful bird!

A bird may do this out of curiosity or for attention. If he is behaving normally otherwise, there is likely no cause for concern. Allow for more playtime in and out of the cage to see if that makes a difference.

By your description, it does not seem to be abnormal behavior. It may simply be something he does for attention. You can monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, loose droppings or perched low with feathers fluffed. These are typical signs of illness.

Hi there, I'm Dr G and I see a lot of birds. Your conure, even though he is not pulling feathers out is still having some "feather picking" or at the least over grooming. This can have so many reasons! So many! Often at this time of year, it relates to seasonal sexual behavior. It can also be a skin infection, stress of some sort, loneliness, and more. I would recommend an exam by a vet to rule out medical problems before starting to work on behavioral reasons. Increased bathing/misting encourages normal grooming behavior. Making sure your bird is on a low seed/high pellet diet and the pellet is free of colors and dyes. (Just make changes slowly). Make sure you are not encouraging sexual or mating behaviors in your bird by not kissing them, not snuggling them too much and not petting along the lower back or abdomen area.

It could be! Birds can sometimes rub on objects they like, or to help clear their beaks/noses. If he does this habitually and isn't showing any signs of illness I wouldn't be concerned. If you do see this happening at other times, he's sneezing a lot, has discharge, or starts to show signs of illness, then a vet check to rule anything out is always best.
