My conure is head bobbing and has dark poop. Is it diet or stress?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Conure | Male | unneutered

Hi, I got my 6 month old conure 4 days ago and just yesterday I’ve noticed a change in behavior. He does a really slow head bob and feather twitch usually accompanied by a low croak or chirp. This behavior stops while he is eating. His first dropping of the morning and changed as well. The white is separate from the poop and the poop is black. The first picture is his first dropping of the day and the next is his second.

Thanks for reaching out about your conure. Decreased appetite often shows are dark feces. Seed is a poor diet for parrots, deficient in vitamins, minerals and proteins. Birds need to eat a wide variety of vegetables, cooked beans as a protein source and avian pellets.
The head bobbing might be reversion to baby-hood, wanting to be fed by mom (induced by stress of new home). Syringe feed if needed to maintain weight.
Good luck.
