My cockatiel keeps yawning. Is this normal or should I worry?

As chicks, one way to make feeding easier is to rub the side of the head in a circular motion. This will result in a yawn. Achu may be displaying this throwback behavior. It is likely no cause for concern. He may simply enjoy the massage and attention. Most birds enjoy being pet or rubbed on the head, neck, beak/nares and under the beak.

Baby birds can sleep a lot, however if you are concerned, you're not sure about her eating and drinking habits, or she is showing other signs of illness such as not being interested in activity, not gaining weight/growing at a normal pace, etc, then scheduling a vet visit would be best to rule out any health issues. Birds don't have a diaphragm like humans do, and so cannot have hiccups. They breathe by expanding and contracting their entire chest. If you think Luna is having trouble breathing, is twitching, gasping, etc, then it would be best to have her examined by a vet, especially if she seems in distress or it is affecting her ability to perform normal activities. It is also possible that she is regurgitating or moving something in her crop, or is just relaxing and making the motion, which can cause a head bob like motion that may resemble a hiccup. If you suspect this is the case, just keeping an eye on her and watching for any changes or signs of illness is best.
