Is my budgie yawning too much? Is it normal or a sign of choking?

Buddy may be yawning. Birds will do this close to bedtime or when relaxed. It is normal and no cause for concern. Regurgitation is also normal and is characterized by an up and down motion of the head as whole seed or food is brought up to share with a mate or owner. If the behavior persists, consider an exam with your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian to diagnose illness or injury or to give a clean bill of health and peace of mind.

Yawning or stretching the beak when perching could just be Zara attempting to relax, or even acting a little stressed from the handling. However if he is actively panting, appears in distress, or is acting this way even when not being handled, it may indicate an issue such as pain, illness, respiratory problems, etc which should be examined by a local avian vet.

It could be a yawn, which is absolutely normal. Monitor fro lethargy, decreased appetite, abnormal droppings or any discharge fro the mouth. As long as Duckie is behaving normally, there is likely no cause for concern.

Yawning 5 times in a row is quite normal in cockatiels. I would worry if she did the yawning over and over and very often. If that is the case you should take her to an avian veterinarian. Yawning in cockatiels is adjusting their crops which is ok, if it is done several times a day, but not ok if the bird is bothered by something in the crop so that he adjusts all the time.

First, having difficulty swallowing, as if something is obstructing the esophagus or crop, or she is nauseous and attempting to regurgitate. The second thing that comes to mind, is a respiratory obstruction, something caught int he trachea. Placing Cheeya in the bathroom with warm steam might help lubricate either and help. But if clinical signs get worse or don't improve, a visit to an avian veterinarian is recommended. Good luck.

Birds can sometimes do this motion to adjust their crop after eating, however if it is happening often, Warrior seems to be having trouble breathing, or there are other signs of illness (lethargic, not eating as much, listless, etc), a vet visit is best to rule out health issues.

Some birds can do that as a normal behavior when food is adjusted in their crop while digesting. You may see them swallow and look like they're going "aaah" for a moment and then return to normal activity. Making sure Dotty is on a balanced diet that is easily digestible can help. Some parasites may also cause crop issues, so using a dewormer to clear any suspected parasites may also help. If you suspect there may be something stuck in her crop or throat such as a foreign body or obstruction, having a vet take a look in person and removing it is best. If the behavior doesn't seem to bother her and she is otherwise normal and healthy, I would just keep an eye on her and make sure she continues to eat, drink, etc. You can check her crop to see if it is normal looking, isn't oozing anything, or isn't swollen or seemingly painful. If she does begin to act ill, is actively gasping or gagging and in distress, or seems to have an issue with her crop, vet care should be sought ASAP.
