Why is my new cockatiel quiet, shivering, and not interacting?

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered

My cockatiel parrot isnt making any sounds since i got him (a week ago) and he's not interacting with me, he's often shivering but he's eating and sleeping usually... is that normal? Or should i be worried? Also, how can i understand my parrot well? He is 8 months old by the way.

I think I would be worried and you should take him to a vet that specializes in birds to examine him. He may have an underlying illness or it may be related to stress. Either way, this is not normal behavior an you should really have him checked out. It it is nothing medical, then at least you have that peace of mind and the vet can give you some good resources on cockatiel care and feeding so that you are sure to have everything correct.

Cockatiels don't usually growl, but if Joy is hissing or seems in distress it is possible he is feeling stressed out in whatever situation he is in. Moving him to a quiet area free from other people and pets, and giving him a chance to relax and settle down may help. If he is kept with other birds that are bothering him, moving him to a separate cage to give him some time to relax may also help. If the behavior continues or he shows any signs of illness, then seeking out veterinary care is best.

Such changes in behavior can be a sign of illness. I suggest getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible. They will do an exam, possibly some labwork and based on these results, be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

Some birds are sensitive to the volume and frequency of the human voice and other noises. Try lowering your voice and speaking softly to him. It can also be a stress response to the new environment and should decrease or disappear as he acclimates.

Those are all very general signs that could indicate Quill isn't feeling well, especially since birds are very good at hiding illnesses until its too late. If the temperature in her room checks out OK and she is still showing symptoms, it wouldn't hurt to bring her to a vet just in case to rule out any issues. Taking note of any other changes, such as to stool consistency, eating habits, etc can also help clue you in (and your vet) to possible issues.

It's possible, but hard to tell without knowing Pancake's breeding history. It could be that Pancake is still just settling into his new place which is why he is quieter, however if he continues to have trouble balancing, seems to act ill, or doesn't seem to settle in as normal, a trip to the vet is a good idea to rule out any health issues that may need treating.

Is Rio still eating but just quieter? The best way to monitor this is not by looking a the food level, as they can scatter it around, but to quantitate the amount of feces produced. Clean the cage daily, same time every day, count number of fecal droppings. Slowing down and eating less might be an indication of being ill, and if concerned, a veterinary visit is recommended. Providing supplemental heat at 80-85 degrees might help support the immune system. Good luck.

My new cockatiel is sick: diarrhea, limping, and inactive. What to do?

Unfortunately, the symptoms you described are very vague signs of illness, so it would be hard to say what is going on without an exam in person. It's good that you're keeping her separated, and I would do so by keeping her in a warm hospital cage to see if that helps her improve. It's possible the diarrhea could be due to a diet change and the stress of coming to a new home, so giving her a day or two to see if she improves may help. Checking for parasites, and making sure she's on a balanced diet (removing any snacks or fruits and veggies for a few days if she has GI upset) may also help. As for the toe, that is very common in commercially bred birds. If it is causing trouble I would have it examined when you are able, but provide low, flat perches and platforms for her to hang out on in the meantime. This can help her stretch the toe and have a place to relax without losing balance. If she doesn't improve in a day or so, or seems to get worse, it is best to try and find a bird vet in your area that can see her right away.
