Why is my cockatiel breathing heavy, sneezing, and not perching?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Cockatiel | Female | unspayed | 3 months and 9 days old

My young cockatiel who is about two months old keeps breathing heavy with open beak along with having issues with closing its right hand. I have also noticed one eye seems to look bigger then the other. Always sneezes constantly and when it wants to sleep it like to lay on something not stand on a perch.

Thanks for reaching out about Aquafina. This sounds serious and a veterinary visit is needed s soon as possible. A respiratory infection (bacterial, fungal), aspiration of food into the trachea, enlarged organs (liver, etc.) or infectious diseases like chlamydophilosis, are all possible. Heat support is important aiming for a constant temperature of 85-90 F. This is a case for a veterinarian not to be dealt with at home.
Good luck.
