What gender cockatiel for my lonely female, and how to introduce?

If the cage is large enough for two birds and they are introduced gradually, another female cockatiel could be added. Adding a male will likely lead to mating and egg laying. Also, the possibility exists that the birds will bond with one another and interact less with you.

That's a lot of questions! When getting a new bird, it is best to keep them in a separate cage for a few weeks (quarantine) to make sure they do not spread any illness to each other. Once the new bird checks out safe, you can keep them near each other to get used to hearing/seeing each other, and then gradually introduce them, whether on a shared play pen, or in a cage that is large enough to comfortably house both. Make sure you have extra food and water dishes, toys, perches, etc so that they cannot fight over these resources or become territorial. Each bird will have different markings depending on the type of coloration the bird is (there are different varieties of markings) so this will greatly depend on if you purchase a bird with similar markings or not.

I think if the new bird would feel comfortable with a companion in his cage then it would be beneficial in helping to tame him. However, if the new bird acts stressed with a cage mate it would be better to leave them separated. Be patient and go slow with the new bird, using lots of treats to help coax him into feeding comfortable with you. It will also help if the new bird watches you interact with your other bird. These are very smart birds and they need stimulation or they can develop depression and other neurosis. Two birds are more likely to bond with each other but that's not to say they won't bond with you as well. They still need stimulation but will keep each other company. Thanks for reaching out. You can try leaving her outside in a cage for a short period of time to see if that will attract him. But she will likely be able to pair again, but not all birds get along. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Charlie and including photos. The female could be becoming territorial due to hormones, trying to protect her prospective nest. Agreed that cage in picture is too small for long term habitation. Can you place a divider in the cage, acquire another larger cage? You can even try re-introduction but with more perches, food/water bowls. Sometimes these are temporary squabbles until hierarchy re-established. Good luck.
