Worried: Is my cockatiel's crop overstretched from too much formula?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Hi I have been overfeeding my 12 week cockatiel a lot since I got him when he was 5 weeks. I overfed because he always had very good appetite and can take a lot of formula. However I'm still worried about his crop position. Dies it look overly stretched from the picture? (FYI, He is now 94 gram, compared to 80 gram when I got him. I just cut off all his formula today since he is old enough and worried about a potential crop problem developing.)

Hi and thank you for your question,
The crop does look distended, especially if this is not right after a feeding.
I don't recommend stopping the formula at once regardless of his age. You should reduce it gradually and only stop it once he is getting very little (5-10ml once daily) and is eating well on his own. Hopefully the crop will come down to a more normal size.
Regards
