My canary is shivering, can't walk, and seems very sick. What to do?

It is unfortunately not possible to know the extent of this just based on a description and an examination would be quite helpful here to determine this better. I would recommend you have her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform an examination and gather more information to start determining what may be wrong with her so that therapy can be started to help her. If your bird is shivering at night you may want to move his cage to a warmer area, or cover the cage at night to prevent drafts. Providing slightly larger perches that are easier to grab and hold onto may also help with perching. If Candy seems ill or can't perch at all, a vet visit to rule out health issues is best.

I highly recommend you have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. Thanks for your question about Hazlet, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. You are correct in that Hazlet is more fluffed than a normal canary should be. You are also correct that this can be a sign of illness (it is part of what we call the "sick bird posture" - this also includes sitting low on the perches or sitting on the ground, closing the eyes, tucking the head, faster breathing). It can also be a sign of stress, or being cold as well. I would recommend that you evaluate where the cage is located - is it near a window, near an outside wall, or near a door? Is the temperature in your house 70F or below - if so, I would recommend increasing the temperature. Now that it has been two days since you posted (I apologize for the delay, by the way), if this has continued and the temperatures and cage location are appropriate, it may be time for a veterinary visit. Often it can take a few days for a bird to get comfortable in their new environment, but if it is still going on now, I would recommend taking him in to see a veterinarian. They can perform a physical examination, and depending on the findings, may have treatment recommendations for you. They can also evaluate the husbandry/care/diet for Hazlet and may make recommendations that are tailored to you and to him. Those are all very general signs of illness in a bird. It would be a good idea to get Blue to a vet as soon as possible to try and determine what may be causing his symptoms. Until you can get to your vet, keeping him in a warm hospital cage with low/no perches and food and water that is easy to get in and out of may help.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Greenna! I can definitely see how her foot is bent inwards, with the claw somewhat contracted. This can be caused by many conditions, but unfortunately, she needs to be seen by vet to figure out what is going on and get some treatment options. This can be caused by nerve damage, a fracture, or a systemic infection, among several other conditions. I hope this helps!

Review diet and husbandry to correct any deficiencies, as low calcium, protein and some vitamins can cause weakness. Infections or metabolic disorders should also be on the differential list.
