How far from my canary is it safe to use wood stain or paint?

That will depend on the type of paint you are using. If the paint is odorless latex paint (you specified odorless paint), then you can wait until it is dry and move your bird back in once the paint is completely dry (which can take a few days). If you are using solvent-based paint then you will have to wait until the solvent has disappeared completely , so your bird will not inhale it , and this can take a week or longer. Best check with the paint manufacturer of your specific paint.

Any wood stain an be used. A water based product would be safer than an oil based one. Sealing the wood after staining would be strongly recommended. Use a water based polyurethane sealant. Allow complete curing/drying before using the enclosed. The general rule is if you can still smell the paint/stain/sealant, then give it more time to dry.

I would definitely make sure the area you are painting in stays well ventilated and that you have some place that you can keep Ringo (living room or a room that won't be painted) while you do so. Keeping fans open, opening windows (depending on the weather conditions) in painted rooms for 24-48 hours, etc can help keep the area ventilated as well. Low VOC paints can also be less irritating on the respiratory tract. If you notice any signs that Ringo may be affected such as listless behavior, trouble breathing, etc, moving him to a well-ventilated area and/or seeking veterinary help is best.

A low VOC paint still has VOCs. The low level may not pose an issue in larger, well ventilated rooms however, if the bird room is small I would still recommend moving the cage. Wait until you can no longer detect any paint odor then move the cage back. Monitor for lethargy, tail bobbing when breathing, decreased appetite or trouble perching.

Hi, I'm happy you're thinking about the safety of Ringo. I recommend choosing a paint brand that has low VOCs or no VOCs - these are paints that don't give off dangerous fumes. Also open windows and doors, and use a fan to ventilate while you work and for a couple of days afterwards until the new paint odor is gone. You may need to remove and repaint interior doors and cupboard doors outside if the gloss paint has a strong odor.

Hello. There really is not enough information to totally recommend removing your bird from your home, especially if a low volatile latex paint is used. But, I think it is a very good idea since you have someone to watch the bird for you. It is not just the paint fumes that need to be considered, but any dust kicked up from the cleaning & preparation of the walls. This is really important if there is any possibility of lead based paint in the house. I would keep Rico out of your home for a full 3 days after the painting is done making sure the whole house is well ventilated. This might be a little overkill, but better safe than sorry. Also, make sure your friend knows exactly how to care for your bird, & that the room conditions are the same as in your home. Hi and thank you for your question, From your question it is clear that you are aware of the risks of exposing birds to various fumes and aerosols. There is no way of giving you an accurate answer without doing all sorts of tests and measurements. However, the rule of the thumb is - if YOU can smell it - it is bad for the bird. Sometimes even if you can't.. Try finding a different place for Ringo while using these substances (outdoors, stairway, balcony etc.)
