Why is my canary defensive when I put my hand in and won't chirp?

Two questions, Please. My Canary, Ringo, doesn't seem to like me. I have had him for one year now. He gets defensive when I put my hand in his cage to put his food in there, like Fruit, Veggies, etc. He Chirps, angrily, and puts his Wings back. I don't chase him around, except when I have to clip his nails. I am the only Caregiver. Second Question - He always chirps to anyone who goes up to his cage to see him, Except ME! Why is that?

Birds, just like other pets, may develop preferences towards humans.
Acclimate him gradually by sitting next to his cage for ever increasing periods of time. He may flutter about and move to the far side of the cage initially but will eventually calm down. Once he does, place your hand in the cage for ever increasing periods of time. Make no attempt to touch or hold him. He'll flutter about and complain again initially. Speak softly and move slowly. Use praise and small treats after each episode.
You may get to the point where Ringo will perch on a finger or sing to you, but if not, do not despair. Be patient and continue working with him. Canaries aren't "cuddly" like cockatoos or other larger birds.
(I have 2 African Greys that are almost 30. I have raised both. One loves me, the other has murder in her eyes whenever I approach to clean the cage or feed her. It is what it is).

It may take a little longer than you thought to get him used to you. Some budgies, if they weren't hand tamed before you got them as little babies, they may always be a little skittish. Try putting his favorite snacks and foods on your hand and holding very still and see if comes over to nibble at that. Keep talking to him and singing to him softly all day so he gets used to you. Try sitting right next to him without moving as well.

My pet bird is distant. How can I bond and build trust with it?

Time, patience, and lots of treats. If you notice Curio has a favorite food, you can start by offering that favorite food only when you're interacting with him. IE, when you pet him, approach his cage, let him out, etc. This can help him to associate you with something fun/good and also make him more curious every time you come by to spend time with him. The same can also be done with toys he likes to play with. Sitting near them when he's out of the cage playing, and feeding a treat every time he comes close or shows interest in you can help teach him that you are safe to interact with and play around. If at any time Curiou becomes nervous or scared, stopping the activity and letting him calm down is best. From there, you can go back to the previous way he was OK with (IE just giving a treat from your hand but not petting) and work again from there.

My bird hand-feeds but won't let me pet or step up. How do I tame him?

Keep at it! Some birds may always be slightly scared, or take a lot more time to get used to it. In some cases, it may be that this is the most your bird enjoys. Some birds may also be fearful while in the cage, but more open to handling outside of it, so if Pebbles has a playstand or something he enjoys outside of his cage you can work with handling there as well.

How long until my budgie is comfortable with my finger in its cage?

Wait until they don't flutter about when you sit near the cage. Then place a hand I n the cage for ever increasing periods of time. They will fly away from you and screech when you place your hand in the cage. This is normal. Once they begin to settle down and accept your presence in the cage, place a small treat in your hand. Do this each time. They will eventually settle down and may approach your hand or finger for a treat. Be patient and be consistent. It may take weeks.

My birds don't like me. How can I build trust and bond with them?

Thanks for reaching out and including photos. The difficulty is winning the trust of these small birds. Try offering treats by hand and then encouraging them to step up to gain the reward. Even using a small diameter perch to step up and then remove them from the cage. Many birds are cage protective and personalities with mellow once out of the cage. Keep all movements slow, noises quiet, and lights low. A book titled " A Guide to a Well Behaved Parrot" has some useful information. Good luck.

My Indian Ringneck screams when I get close. How can I bond with him?

Ignore the screaming and initially sit by his cage for short periods of time. He may scream, flutter about or move to the far side of the cage, but simply sit. Move slowly and talk softly during these times. As he accepts your proximity, increase the amount of time you sit by him. Once he accepts you, begin again but this time, place your hand in the cage. Be prepared for more screaming and fluttering about. Make no attempt to touch or hold him. As he settles down, leave your hand inside for longer periods of time. Provide a treat and praise after each session. Eventually, you may be able to teach Peru to perch on your hand. Be patient and be consistent.
