My canary ate oat groats instead of seed. Is he okay after 24 hours?

If his behavior is unusual or any symptoms (such as changes to the stool and lethargic behavior) are worsening, seeking a vet visit in person is always best to rule out issues such as GI upset, illness, etc. Adding a little grit to the diet may also help better breakdown seeds in his food and allow him to digest/pass them more easily. Sometimes, parasites can look like seeds in the stool, so having a vet take a look and checking for any parasites may also be a good idea. As for fresh fruits and veggies, birds can sometimes be picky about what they eat. The best rule of thumb is to keep offering them until your bird finally gets curious enough to try it. He may find a new favorite!

Hi and thank you for the question, The oats (dry or soaked) will do him no harm, but are not necessary either. His diet should be based on commercial pellets for small parrots if available. Otherwise a seed mixture can be used but should be supplemented with vitamins/minerals and some fruits/veggies if he eats them. Regards

It's possible her crop may have been overfull so she was adjusting it, if she is otherwise acting normal and healthy, however it is best to keep an eye on her just in case. If she continues to bring up food, has other discharge from the mouth or nose, doesn't gain weight or loses it, or begins to act ill, it would be best to have her examined by a vet to rule out issues such as crop infections, illness, etc.

Hello. Two weeks is definitely long enough to see if there was going to be any acute symptoms from eating the birdseed. It appears she will be fine, but if you do have occasion to take Miracle in to your vet, it would not be a bad idea to run some bloodwork on her. Groats and oatmeal come from the same plant, however groats have had the husk removed; oatmeal has not. I suspect that the food you're looking at uses oat hulls as a source of mostly insoluble (non-digestable) fiber, so they are sort of a filler (something having little to no nutritional value) and sort of not. Similarly, pearled barely has had the husk removed and the grains have been polished, so barley would retain the husk and thus have some additional benefit for fiber. Millet is actually a plant, but the tiny spherical components of the plant that are used in foods are actually seeds and not grains.

Raw oats will be hard for your dog to digest, and you may see GI upset such as vomiting and diarrhea. There is also a concern of bloat if your dog ate a ton of food. Keep a close on your dog, and if you see a bloated abdomen, restlessness, pacing, excessive drooling, vomiting, trying to vomit but can't, or anorexia, have your dog seen by a vet immediately. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You should start offering him small amount of water about 1.5-2hrs after the had the tablets. Start with 2-3 tablespoon of water and if he drinks it and keeps it down, you can slowly increase the volume of water every 45-60 minutes. If he is not sick after water, you can introduce some bland food, for example cooked chicken or white fish and give that to him every 2-3 hrs. You can add a bit of rice or pasta into it. If everything goes well, you should be able to put him back on his regular food within 24-48hrs.
