My budgie has white blisters on its feet. Mites? What should I do?

If he will allow, you can soak his feet in warm water. Caked on dirt will dissolve. To diagnose mite infection, Rascal will need to be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian. Skin scrapes may provide a diagnosis. Treatment may be a combination of systemic medication (typically ivermectin) and topical treatment of the feet. It will yake time to resolve a severe mite infection. Maintain a clean cage and provide a healthy, varied diet.

The feet look relatively normal from what I can see, however if you are noticing any major swelling, open visible wounds, or Coqui doesn't seem to want to stand on one or both feet, then it could indicate an infection. Soaking the feet in epsom salts and keeping them clean and dry with a clean washcloth can help resolve minor issues, however if the swelling worsens, the wound worsens, or Coqui seems very painful and isn't able to get around, vet care is needed. Your vet can help clean the affected area and provide antibiotics or other medication as needed.

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This appears to be a problem caused by mites, called scaly mites. This can also be a nutritional problem or other type of skin infection. Please have Blue seen by a veterinarian who sees birds and is experienced. A physical exam and possibly some tests (skin scrape, cytology) will determine the cause and treatment can be started. Mites in birds are often treated with a drug called ivermectin or similar. Without seeing a photo, it is hard to tell what is going on. You can resubmit your question with a photo attached, schedule a consult with one of our vets, or seek out the care of a vet in person. Blisters can be from a number of things including injury, a burn, infection on the leg, parasites, etc. Keeping the area clean and dry with the use of a clean washcloth, and keeping Raymond from picking at the area may help it to heal, or keep it from getting worse until a vet can take a look.

Most birds do not need any type of medication on there feet. I would be concerned that possible Blue Moon is having a mild flare up of bumble foot. This is an infection of the foot which causing sores and thickening of the skin. If you feel like the feet are abnormal I would recommend taking Blue moon to the vet to make sure he does not need medication. If his feet appear normal but a little dry I would not be really concerned about this.

Keep an eye on her. If she will allow, you can clean it daily with a mild antiseptic cleanser. Provide perches of different shapes, textures and thicknesses to condition her feet. Having only round perches of one size can lead to sores on the feet and overgrown nails.

I am concerned that your lovebird has an infection in the foot or in the joints of the foot. Sometimes if the infection becomes severe can spread into the bone which makes it very painful and more difficult heal. I would recommend taking your bird to be examined by your veterinarian. She may need to do x-rays to determine the extent of the infection and see if it has traveled into the bone. Your bird will likely need to be put on an antibiotic for a while to help clear up the infection as well. Your veterinarian can also prescribe pain medication so your lovebird can be more comfortable while the infection is healing. I hope this helps.
