My budgie has wheezing for 6 months. What's causing her breathing issues?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Female

The budgie (1,5 y old female) has respiratory problems (loud cracking- and wheezing-sounds during each breath) for half a year. It is not responding to treatment by ATB or by stuff nose-relief drops. She's otherwise healthy. What may be the cause? Is it asthma, chronic inflammation of lower respiratory tract or maybe some mites? May there be some obstruction in the airways, either foreign body or even tumour? Please advice me of possible causes and appropriate treatments of them. Thank you!

Thanks for reaching out about Cvirinka. Wheezing for 6 months is unlikely to be bacterial but possibly fungal or obstructive. Diagnostics tests need to be performed, and this will aid in a treatment plan. Enlarged coelomic masses (liver, kidney, ovary) can also lead to respiratory congestion. Cardiac disease also needs to be ruled out.
Good luck.
