Why are my budgie's foot toes curling? Could it be vitamin D?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Parakeet | Male | unneutered

Hi, This recently happened yesterday to my yellow budgie, he is currently 7 about to be 8 years old. On his right foot his toes started to curl. After doing some research online I found that it could be many reasons but I’m not sure. My best guess would be vitamin D deficiency due to limited sunlight exposure so I’m looking at multivitamin drops for them.

Thanks for reaching out about Dhal and including photos. Vitamin D3 and calcium deficiencies could result in weakened bones and possible fractures/metabolic bone disease. Other considerations are enlarged internal organs (right testicle or kidney) placing pressure on the nerve going to the limb, and possible orthopedic problems. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan which should include radiographs. Fractures and luxations are painful and difficult to fix later, testicular or renal enlargement might be more responsive to treatments early on in the disease.
Good luck.
