Why are my budgies scratching and is blood in their cage normal?

You can mist him with warm water to encourage preening. This will promote healthy plunage. If he continues to itch, it may due to mites or infection. These would require an exam with your veterinarian for confirmation. Mites can be treated with an over the counter spray. Read labels v\carefully to confirm the chosen product can be used on birds. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, perches and toys. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Change the cage paper daily. If an infection (bacterial or fungal) is diagnosed, your vet can prescribe the appropriate medication.

Your bird may have a skin infection, like from a bacteria or fungus, or he may have skin mites causing him to be so itchy. I would recommend taking him to the vet to be checked out so that the underlying problem can be treated and he will stop being so itchy. I hope this helps. Tail bobbing can occur when birds are having difficulty breathing, and the scratching at the cere can indicate irritation. The other signs that she is having can occur with many diseases. I would recommend taking your budgie to a veterinarian for evaluation. If this is not an option in your area, I would recommend ensuring that your bird is kept in a warm environment and be sure that the nostrils are not blocked. Provide low or no perches in a small hospital cage and ensure that good and water are within easy reach. I hope this gives you a place to start, and that your bird feels better soon.

Thanks for reaching out. Birds need to be trained just like dogs, so desensitizing to toughing they don't accept will potentially work. Start with the contact he accepts,and continue this. Then similar to before, try to expand the area of contact. Over time, hopefully he will feel less threatened. Good luck.

Scratching can be for a very large number of reasons including normal molting (which will result in the loss of feathers, which you may be seeing, and the growing in of new ones, or pin-looking feathers poking out of the skin), mites or other parasites on the skin, allergies, nutritional issues, infections, and more. Taking a look under the feathers for any signs of pin feathers can let you know if this is a normal molt. Some whitish debris is normal (bird dander) however if you are seeing lots of flecks of "stuff", redness, visible parasites, etc, then it can indicate mites or lice which should be treated with a spray. If you are seeing visible wounds, redness, injuries, etc, it could indicate a wound, infection, or allergy which should be examined by and treated by a vet in your area. Allergies may also be treatable by ensuring the cage and environment around Sugar are kept clean and dust-free. Nutritional issues and illness may also cause scratching, however you may see other problems such as changes in weight, eating or drinking habits, stool, behavior, etc in addition to scratching. If you suspect this may be the case, having a vet take a look is best.

Sky might be a bit stressed out from the change, but that cage looks pretty nice and roomy! I'd put new paper down on the floor of the cage that is easy to see droppings on so that you can monitor for any more signs of blood in the stool, as well as examine Sky if he'll let you to check for any injury such as a broken feather or break in the skin. If he seems to be acting normal and healthy, and you don't see any more blood in the stool or on the body, wouldn't worry too much. if the blood continues in the stool, a vet checkup to rule out issues such as parasites is always a good idea. If you see an injury on the body, stopping bleeding with styptic powder and then keeping the area clean and free of debris can help, however if you notice a broken blood feather or severe injury that isn't healing, having a vet take a look is best.
