My budgie is quiet and sleepy after a perch fell. Is he injured?

So we arent sure what's going on with budgie. Last night and this morning before I went to work, he was active and chirping. Today, we come home from work, one of his perches were knocked down and he normally chirps when we come in. Now, he isnt making any noise, doesnt try to fly. Right now, hes sitting with my husband, and just fell asleep. We're considering taking him to a vet, but want to see if it's something that we dont know of.

Thanks for reaching out about your budgie. Trauma can be very stressful and will result in being quiet and scared. The concern is that he is quiet and falling asleep. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give comfort. Try offering a little water via a syringe or shallow bowl.

Thanks for reaching out about Cutie and including photos. Cutie needs to be presented to a veterinary clinic, as this appears critical. Remove perches and give a soft towel on bottom of cage. Ensure that food and water are within reach. Heat support in the 80-85 F range might give some assistance.

Lethargy and sleeping during the day (to conserve energy) are clinical signs of being sick, the question is why. Providing heat support in the 80-85 F range can give some support. Monitor fecal production by a total cage clean-out. Sick birds often act like they're eating but aren't. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Multiple possibilities include ingestion of foreign material (metal, fabric, wood, etc.), metabolic concerns (liver, renal), infections (viral, bacterial) and others. Good luck.

Poor little birdie! What a cutie too. It is quite possible he could have some dehydration or loss of energy due to his excursion, or could have become injured or caught some illness. If his lethargy continues, he seems to be sneezing frequently, he isn't eating well, or he seems puffed up/hunched over or is sitting on the floor of his cage then I would bring him into the vet for an examination.

If you just acquired him 1-2 days ago, could be stress and not sleeping well at night. Provide supplemental heat support in the 80-85 F range to give support. If you believe that he could be injured in any way, I recommend having him evaluated by your nearest veterinarian. Bird's may hide their clinical signs, so subtle signs such as a wing droop or fluffed feathers may indicate underlying disease/injuries. Your veterinarian may recommend x-rays to evaluate for any orthopedic (boney) injuries, which may require the placement of a splint or bandage. If he continues to act normally (eating, drinking, passing normal feces/urates) and perching normally, he will likely be OK. I hope this is helpful!
