My budgie is mourning his friend and won't go back in his cage.

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male

Dear Dr, One of my budgies died recently and Coco, who was good friends with him, is very quiet. The cage is on a dressing table with a mirror behind it. His cage has a blanket behind it so Coco can't see the mirror. When we let him out, he flys around and settles down on the cage's top. When we let him out, a day and a night ago, he didn't fly back in. He is nestled to the mirror and he doesn't come into his cage. I put millet and water on it. He's scared of hand. What can I do? He looks sad :(

Poor Coco! It sounds like he may be mourning the loss of his friend and is still a bit depressed. It sounds like you are already giving him some extra love and attention, which can help him feel a little better. Once he seems ready, adding in a new friend, or spending more one on one time interacting may help him feel a bit better and cheer him up.
