Is ivermectin safe for my budgie if he ingests a small quantity?

Your veterinarian diagnosed your bird being infected with knemidocoptes mites, a type of scabies, that affects the legs and beak and eyes. This is a parasite. Ivermectin and the parraffin oil will kill the mites, nut it will take some time for the skin to heal and get replaced with healthy skin. The treatment your veterinarian recommended is the proper treatment and you do not have to do anything else. You may want to tell your friend to check his birds for the same signs.

It's very likely to be mites but there are no natural remedies for this condition, it is treated with a medication called Ivermectin, every vet has this medication and could provide it to you. coconut oil or Vaseline won't solve the problem or even help at all.

Ask your vet to look for ivermectin dosage for birds, he needs to use the injectable form (which he has for sure as it is widely used for dogs in India), he DOES NOT need to inject it to your bird, he only needs to put the small quantity on his skin back of his neck, usually one drop is enough), he will need to repeat it 3 times, each dosage one week apart.

Poor little guy! He very possibly has scaly mites. Ideally he should be seen by an avian veterinarian, but there is an over-the-counter product called Avimec that is a drop-on remedy for scaly mites. These mites only live on the body, so you don't have to treat the cage as well, but it would be a good idea to take it apart anyway and give it a good deep cleaning just to be safe. The mites live only on the birds, which is not to say they can't fall off, but typically treating all the animals in the habitat is sufficient to cure. The best treatment is a systemic medication called ivermectin but the benzoate works well. But this is not a systemic drug, therefore if an area is missed topically might not clear the infestation or take longer. Be careful applying around the eyes. Good luck.

No, coconut oil is not good for budgies in any form or way. feather diseases are common in budgies and can be caused by various reasons such as mites, viral infections, bacterial infections and internal organ disorders. i would recommend taking coco to an avian vet in order to get it treated ASAP.

You can mist him with warm water to encourage preening. This will promote healthy plunage. If he continues to itch, it may due to mites or infection. These would require an exam with your veterinarian for confirmation. Mites can be treated with an over the counter spray. Read labels v\carefully to confirm the chosen product can be used on birds. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, perches and toys. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Change the cage paper daily. If an infection (bacterial or fungal) is diagnosed, your vet can prescribe the appropriate medication.
