My budgie is fat, fluffed, and breathing heavy. Is it egg binding?

My budgie before 2 days got "fat" instantly.Her feathers now are fluffed up,shes haevy breathing,shes trying to sleep. She cant reach her vent anymore so its dirty(shes trying with her claws but its ineffective. I went to a vet and he prescribed her a medicine.She can still fly but not that good.My other parakeet seems healthy and happy.Sometimes he preens her I can also see her organ from her vent .Is it illness or egg binding?? I would like to get a detailed answer if possible please.

Unfortunately, without an in person exam, it would be hard to say what exactly is going on. Egg-binding can definitely cause an obstruction and protrusion like pictured, as can issues with the vent being clogged with stool or underlying illness. If you suspect egg binding, you can try putting her in a warm water bath to help break up any stool crusted to her vent and to help the muscles to relax some to see if she can pass the egg. Since budgie eggs are so delicate I wouldn't recommend trying to remove it on your own as it can easily break inside her.

Moving her to a hospital cage that is kept warm and with low perches/easy access to food can also help, as can catching her to help keep her vent clean and free of debris. I would also bring her back to a vet ASAP if the medication given is not helping.

    Thanks for reaching out about Pie and including photos. The only way to confirm egg-binding is through radiographs. Birds lay their eggs usually prior to dawn, so if still has an egg, it is egg binding. A veterinary visit is highly recommended, now. This is an medical emergency. Provide heat support in the 80-85 F range, Placed cage in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes. If this does not work, see your veterinarian.

    Egg binding is an emergency situation in birds. Depending on the severity of the situation, sometimes at home treatment can be beneficial but others will not thoroughly help your cause. Many people suggest raising the humidity of your environment as well as lubricating the vent area thoroughly, in cases of very mild egg binding. Most are too far beyond this upon realizing what has occurred.

    I would urge you to take your pet in to see your veterinarian as soon as you possibly can to avoid complications. Sometimes injections (vitamins, minerals, and a substance called oxytocin) are required. In a case of very severe egg binding, it can be a surgical emergency (if the reproductive tract has ruptured, etc), or require removal by your doctor another way (sometimes under anesthesia with thorough lubrication...sometimes we have to break the egg apart so it can be passed...it really depends on the situation.

    Either way-it is best to be seen immediately or it could risk the life of your pet. I hope that she gets seens soon and is on her way to recovery!

In most cases, this requires veterinary care as incorrectly trying to remove the egg can cause it to break inside the vent which can lead to infection. If you're already feeding her a proper diet, soaking her bottom in warm water, or using a little olive oil around her vent may help to pass the egg gently without breaking it.

That does look concerning and should be checked out by a vet. Bulging of the stomach or near the vent could be any number of things including fatty deposits, growths or tumors, infections, or even an egg that is stuck and unable to pass. If she seems in distress, seeking veterinary care ASAP is best. Keeping her warm, eating, and drinking may help, however having it looked at is needed.

My bird seems egg bound. What are the symptoms and home remedies?
Most birds will lay one egg every other day. The condition is more common in smaller breeds, and can be more serious as well. Ideally, she should be examined by a veterinarian or an experienced avian veterinarian. If one is unavailable right now, provide supplemental heat, about 90 F. Soak her for 20-30 minutes in a warm Epsom salt solution, enough to submerge her vent. Dry thoroughly then use a sterile lubricant (or vegetable oil) around the vent. Monitor for lethargy, straining or difficulty breathing. If she develops any of these symptoms, she should be seen at the nearest veterinary ER immediately. Be sure to feed a balanced diet and provide a cuttlebone or mineral block for additional calcium. Limit seeds and offer mainly a commercial pelleted diet (Harrison's, Lafeber, KayTee Exact or Pretty Bird) supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you suspect Kiwi is egg bound it would be best to bring her to a vet. While you can attempt to remove the egg yourself with gentle massage with olive oil or vaseline, you risk breaking the egg inside of her which can lead to infection and severe complications. In the future, feeding a balanced diet and additional calcium can help prevent egg binding, but in the case of a currently stuck egg or other protrusion, vet care ASAP is best.

Thanks for reaching out about Dudo. Lipomas or fatty deposits are a common condition of budgies, and can be large enough to impinge on the cloacal area, making it difficult to defecate. Fat deposits can also happen in the liver and abdominal cavity that can reduce respiratory capacity. Diet is the primary cause, too much seed. If continues to have breathing concerns, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess for secondary bacterial infections. Good luck.

My parakeet is puffed up on the cage floor. Is she sick or egg-bound?
I am sorry to hear about your concern for Julia. She is a pretty parakeet! If she is sitting on the floor of her cage for long periods puffed up this is concerning. Any time a bird is having its feathers puffed up for long periods of time this can be a sign of illness. While birds who are laying eggs will go down to the floor of the cage if they don't have a nest box area they wouldn't normally stay on the floor of the cage for long periods each day. I would be concerned your bird could be egg-bound, meaning she could have an egg that she is having trouble laying. You may be able to tell this if you bird is handleable and you can flip her over to look at her vent/cloaca area. You may see a swelling here or palpate a large firmness in the area if she is egg bound. If you feel this, I would recommend getting her to a vet right away, or if she is continuing to spend long periods of time on the floor and puffed up, she should see the vet to check for other signs of illness.
