My bird falls, gets injured, and won't mate. Why does the male shout?

A pair does not always result in a mating unfortunately. It may take more time for them to bond and court. If it isn't mating season, nothing will get them together. Be patient, continue to care for them and in the future they may mate. It is always recommended to have any new pet examined by a veterinarian to confirm good health or to diagnose and treat any pre-existing conditions.

Your partner should not stroke Mattie on her back, tail or underneath, nor should he "beak wrestle" as these can all be construed as courtship behavior to a bird.

This is a tough questions. If you definately don't want babies, a male would be the best choice. Males often get along well, but birds pick their own friends. So just going out and purchasing another male lovebird might still have aggression. Acquiring another bird from a rescue group might allow visit to determine compatibility. Good luck.

It is possible the male became frustrated, or there was competition over shared resources such as food, water, bedding, etc, that led to a fight and the death of your female if it appears she was attacked by the male. Making sure birds have enough space to move around and access food and water safely is always needed, as well as slow introductions when two birds haven't been together before or in a long time. It would probably be best not to introduce another bird to your male, and to instead focus on enrichment in other ways such as adding in puzzle toys, treats, fun things to interact with, etc, instead of adding a new bird that may stress him out or cause competition.

Nutrition has be be adequate to provide calories/nutrients for egg formation. A nest site acceptable to both needs to be provided. Diseases of both male and female can lead to infertility. Same-sex birds can attempt to mate with each other, especially if it is mating season for them. If one of the birds seems stressed out by this, then separating the two for a period of time is best to avoid increasing stress or causing injury to one of the birds. If you are interested in breeding your birds and have a male and female, adding in more protein and calcium to their diet, as well as increasing the amount of daylight they get may help encourage egg laying and raising a clutch.
