My bird has a discolored beak. Should I separate it from its mate?

If you're seeing discoloration or growth on the beak itself or Rj is acting ill (not wanting to eat or drink, trouble breathing or eating, listless behavior, etc) in addition to the change, it would be smart to have a vet take a look to rule out any issues such as a bacterial or fungal infection causing it. Some foods and pellets can also cause staining of the beak or feathers, so checking to see if any fruits or vegetables given match the discoloration may alert you to what is causing it so you can remove it and offer other items in addition to her regular diet.

Beak color changes can sometimes happen in parakeets when they are ready to mate, or are near a female that is currently ready to mate. If he is housed with any other birds this could be the case. Some illnesses and infections may also cause beak color changes, but you may see other signs in addition to this such as changes in appetite, stool, energy, etc. I would keep an eye on the beak if he is still acting normal, and if you see any signs of illness, or the beak becomes bothersome/prevents him from eating and drinking normally then scheduling a vet visit is best.

It is best not to let your pet bird interact with wild birds as they can easily spread illnesses and disease back and forth to each other. If you suspect the wild bird may be ill and he will let you handle him, it is best to try and catch him so that you can bring him in for medical care. If he will not allow handling, then speaking with a local wildlife rescue/rehab in your area that can safely capture and treat him is best.

You should have your bird seen by a veterinarian who can easily diagnose a mite infection and then treat it with ivermectin, You should bring both birds, as both need to be treated.

Separating him to a hospital cage that is kept warm and with easy access to food and water may also help to prevent the spread of any illness and to keep Ocean comfortable if your other parakeet is picking on him until you can be seen by your vet. You can also use a warm washcloth to try and remove any debris to make him more comfortable.

Poor Harley! Some things can cause a dark spot to appear on the beak, such as a bruise from an injury (flying into a window or other hard surface) and sometimes from nutrient deficiencies. Making sure Harley is on a balanced diet of seed and pellets appropriate for budgies (most pet stores will carry these) may help. Bruises will usually resolve on their own, however, If you think Harley may have been injured, or the dark spot spreads/peels/worsens, then having your vet examine her is best.
