My bird cage has rust and chipped paint. Is it safe or can I fix it?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Female | unspayed

If my cage is very slightly rusted and has paint chipping away do I need a new cage or can I just sand it off with sand paper and clean away the shavings?

Clean it thoroughly then reseal it with a bird safe paint. Ideally, a new cage would be recommended if your budget allows. A larger bird may be able to break a wire or bar weakened by rust and cleaning. This can cause injury or infection.
