What's causing my baby cockatiels' strange voice, yeast, and deaths?

Thanks for reaching out, but am sorry for your loss. There are lots of possibilities, but a non-avian veterinarian would have been a better choice than breeders. Coccidiosis would have resulted in diarrhea. Unfortunately only a necropsy can give definitive answers. Bacterial or viral infections, metabolic disorders such as liver or kidney problems, toxicities are only a few possibilities. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your birds. First thoughts are of a tracheal obstruction, possible infection or aspirated seed. Either of these can lead to acute death. Ticks are extremely rare in birds and can usually be removed manually. Mites or lice are more common. Treating them with organophosphates might be risky with chicks around. If possible, wait until chicks are weaned and out of the nest. Then the cage can be thoroughly cleaned and the birds treated. A veterinary visit will be needed to prescribe a treatment. Good luck.

It's possible there is a yeast or another infection still ongoing, especially if her beak and cere are so flaky and there is buildup. Having your vet take another look and taking a sample to send off for testing or getting started on an anti-fungal may help resolve the problem. Sounds like you need to take him to your veterinarian due to the behavior and clinical signs that you are describing. Your vet can perform a physical exam and then advise some tests to try to determine what is going on. They can run some quick tests in house such as a fecal wet mount and fecal smear to evaluate the organisms present. Birds can get something called AGY or Avian Gastric Yeast which can cause these types of problems. Also foreign bodies can be ingested even if the bird is caged constantly from toys, cage covers, etc. A cloacal swab can be obtained and sent out as well as bloodwork and x-rays. Once all of the tests are completed, a sound treatment plan can be put into place. So Sorry you are experiencing this problem with Baby. Good Luck

Without medication, recovery is unlikely. Supply heat support in the 80-85 F range for immune support. Schedule a veterinary visit for prescription of medications. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about this. Are we talking about chickens. No sure what diseases are prevalent in Africa but if multiple bird dying simultaneously, concerns would be around a viral etiology. Many countries have national veterinary diagnostic laboratories that might help with a diagnosis. Once a diagnosis is concluded, a treatment plan can be implemented. Isolation and quarantining any sick animals is important to decrease cross contamination. Good luck.

It could be infection, congenital defects, environmental issues (too cold) simply parental inexperience. Post mortem exams and diagnostics on the chicks may provide an answer. It is difficult to determine cause from an image. Consider giving the hen a rest from breeding. Clean and sanitize the cage, bowls, toys and perches. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Clean and sanitize the nesting boxes or replace them entirely. Speak with local breeders to determine if this is not an isolated issue. They may also be able to provide helpful tips or insight.
