What causes my young horse's dry cough when she's in her stall?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Farm Animal | Horse | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 800 lbs

I adopted my yearling filly in November. And I have noticed she has had a cough of and on since November. Its a dry cough and she has no other symptoms. And has had all her vaccines. She doesn't cough when I exercise her it is and she is kept in the pasture. It is usually always when she is in the stall. She traveled from mississippi to TN. She has been here for almost 5 months.

Hello. If Skye only coughs on occasion, this may be either an allergic-type condition or some residual areas in the lungs that have not healed following a previous infection. I would make sure dust is kept to a minimum as best you can in the stall & dampen her hay before feeding. You may need to have a vet come out to listen carefully to her lungs to see if any unusual sounds are picked up that might indicate any areas of consolidation or thickening of airways or tissue. Often a course of antibiotics & steroids are necessary to clean up any leftover lung infections, or an inhalant medication like albuterol is useful if there are some bronchospasms especially in reversible pulmonary problems.
