My sheep has arthritis and a sore foot. How can I relieve her pain?

My sheep can hardly walk as her foot is very sore. She has arthritis in her leg. Is there anything that would help her arthritis you would recommend? Please

There are medications that can help with the foot rot and arthritis. The foot rot is best treated with good hoof trimming and daily soaks. Below is a link to some great information about foot rot and treatment options.

Arthritis usually requires daily administration of an anti-inflammatory. Unfortunately, we cannot (legally and ethically) advise medication without having an established patient-doctor relationship. It is also dangerous for us to advise medication without examining Dora and fully understanding her condition and medical history.

If you suspect arthritis, then I highly recommend you schedule an appointment with your veterinarian. While you may highly suspect arthritis, the vet may find something that was not previously detected and the diagnosis and treatment could be completely different than what you suspect. Also, no medication is completely safe and it's possible that Dora could have an adverse reaction to the proposed medications, which could make things much worse than they were before. For these reasons, it's always best to only give medication as directed by your veterinarian.

    Hello. No bother, If this is foot rot it can indeed be contagious. But more than likely there is some underlying issue with Annabelle that allowed this to get out of control. Perhaps something with her immune system. Goats can be pretty antsy when it comes to doing any kind of treatments, but another idea might be to soak a pad of gauze in the solution I mentioned ( & if you have no veterinarian who can supply these to you, you can try using Kopertox ) & wrap the soggy gauze to the bottom of the foot with bandage material. Change this every few days & at each change try to pare away more of the hoof as the tissue softens up. Sometimes adding injectable tetracycline will help. Just use a dose often mentioned on some of the goat sites ( we are not allowed to recommend doses on this site ). Hopefully this will help. Poor guy! That looks painful!! All the dead/affected tissue needs to be removed and then he needs his feet soaked in a foot bath containing a commercial solution of either copper sulfate or zinc sulfate. In your sherp's case, the foot is likely to bleed a lot during trimming and is likely going to be painful. I would suggest having a veterinarian help you with the first trim and teach you. Also, they can help come up with a plan for flock management to try and keep it from coming back.

Hello! Lots of animals can benefit from supplements like glucosamine. Your local feed store should be able to point you in the right direction for brands and types available for livestock. Wraps are unlikely to help Bella. If wraps are applied wrongly or too tight you can actually cause more harm than good so I wouldn't recommend it. Keeping her warm in cold weather (like a barn) and lots of straw for padding will also help to keep her warm and comrortable

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about your baby! The good thing is that arthritis has some treatment options that can be quite effective. That diet is excellent. However, the metabolic aspect of it is for dogs who need to lose weight. If Koko Rae is already in a good body condition, you can get the Science Diet j/d that is great for joints but does not have the metabolic component for weight loss. That diet alone can make a huge difference. Deramaxx is usually used on an as needed basis for pain control. You could also consider joint supplements such as Dasuquin and Cosequin. Medically, in addition to an anti-Inflammatory like previcox there are additional pain medications she could be started on. Adjunctively to medications, laser treatments, hydrotherapy (underwater treadmill), and acupuncture are all options you could look into to help her as well. Good luck!

My dog's front legs lock up. What can I give for arthritis pain?
Poor Foxi sounds like she is painful! Arthritis is common in older dogs. I would take her into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose if she is suffering from arthritis, and can give her some pain meds for it. Rimadyl (an NSAID) is a good drug to give to help with the symptoms of arthritis. Please do not give her any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I also recommend giving her glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate supplements. They provide the necessary nutrients for cartilage repair and function. Use of them helps relieve some of the symptoms of arthritis, and you can use it in conjunction with Rimadyl to help maximize relief from her symptoms. Usually this can improved with joint supplements like Cosequin and the food Science Diet j/d. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment of this. If they agree that this is likely, they can go ahead and prescribe this to help her.
