My Juliana pig has skin bumps. Could it be mites or ringworm?

A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Thanks for reaching out about Wilbur and including a photo. At first appearance, two possibilities come to mind: ringworm (fungal dermatitis) and a benign tumor called a trichofolliculuma. A veterinary visit is recommended for both situations to provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Ringworm will require anti-fungal treatments, and is possibly contagious to people. The trichofolliculuma would need minor surgery to remove. Good luck.

My best guess is that this could be ringworm however it is impossible to tell just by looking at a photo. I suggest you get this spray and apply it 2-3 times daily on the affected area. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching her as ringworm, if it is that, is contagious to people.

Thank you for your question, and thank you for the photos - they are very helpful. The area in the photo is a normal structure, and it is a nipple on your guinea pig's belly. There should be one on the other side if you part the hair. These will be present on both sexes of guinea pigs (males and females), and there should be two of them. In the photo that you provided, the nipple and surrounding area do not look inflammed or irritated, and the skin appears very comfortable. I saw that you mentioned that your guinea pig had been itching - mites and lice are very common in guinea pigs, and these could be potential sources of the itchiness that you are seeing. If the itching continues, I would recommend seeking out a veterinarian to evaluate for parasites. If they find them, s/he can prescribe an anti-parasitic medication to treat your guinea pigs. Please do not give your guinea pigs any human medications at home, as many of them can be harmful to our furry friends. I hope that helps, and thank you again for including photos!

Hello, without seeing at least a photo is hard for me to say too much. My first thought based on your description is that Nugget may have ringworm. Mites are also possible but ringworm is more common. Of course he could have an injury from one of the other pigs. All are possibilities. I suggest you just monitor him for now and if there is no significant change in the size of the lesion (in about a week to 10 days) then I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam. Hope this helps.
