Hello, thank you for using Pet Coach. Unfortunately there are no food toppers that I am aware of that will be suitable for a cat with kidney disease. Sticking to a strict prescription kidney diet is the BEST treatment for kidney disease and I don't suggest you stray from that. I don't know if you are only feeding Tony the dry formula but most come also as canned food so you could always top off with the canned food. You could even puree it into a gravy if you wish. Because this food isn't prescription, it won't be formulated to be lower in phosphorus and protein. I would speak to Tony's vet to see if they recommend using something as a topper to get him to eat his food.

Hi can I use a freeze dried raw dinner morsel as a topper on Tony’s kidney food? It seemed to really help him enjoy his kidney food today , like never before. He is in early stages, and kidney food has been a struggle even on an appetite stimulant.
Hello, thank you for your question about Tony. I am sorry to hear that Tony does not seem to love the kidney diet; these are known to have a bland taste so many animals do not like them. The freeze dried morsels have a high protein content; most veterinarians recommend minimizing protein ingestion in patients with kidney disease. However with that being said, the main goal in any patient with kidney disease is to ensure that they eat. If this helps Tony eat his food regularly I think it is ok to add this as a meal topper. One other thing you could try (if you are using dry kibble) is to add a small amount of low sodium chicken broth to moisten the food and help improve the taste. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi and thanks for posting. A brand that comes to mind that may be what you are looking for is Sojos which is freeze dried food. You add a small amount of water to it and the food pieces are on the softer side but not mushy. I hope this helps!

There are so many choices out there for diets now it is almost exhausting trying to choose among them. One of the main things you can at least look for on the packaging is the AAFCO certification. This means that the company at meets a certain standard and that the pet food company meeting this standard has underwent certain testing voluntarily by an independent organization. Fromm's is definitely one of these companies. Honest kitchen is also AAFCO approved though they would like to make the claim that their food is essentially people food. Dietarily speaking, I am more a traditionalist and would definitely going with Fromm's. They are a well-established company that will go to great lengths to defend their product and name. In terms of my personal recommendations as to food quality and efficacy, Purina and Hills Science Diet are the only company that do extensive food trials for every single one of their diets as far as I know.
