Would you reccomend the BARF diet (biologically appropriate raw food) for a 5 year old medium dog? If so or not, why? I'm concerned it'll grow tired of dog feed.
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! I do not recommend a raw diet for Spoty. These diets are not balanced appropriately for domesticated dogs and can carry bacteria (salmonella) can cause diarrhea and sometimes death. This bacteria is also contagious to humans. I recommend diets made my quality pet food companies. In the US, I like Hills/Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina, and Iams. These diets are made by veterinary nutritionists and tested for safety for decades. Dogs typically don’t get bored with the same diet like humans do. If they aren’t offered anything different they won’t know there is something better. If you wanted to add something more I would get the canned food that matches the dry food you pick and add that to his food. Watch how much you feed so you don’t give him too many calories. Easy snacks include raw carrots or green beans. You can also dehydrate boneless chicken breasts to use as treats and rewards. Most of the premium diets offer treats in their product lines. These brands include Royal Canin, Canidae, Acana or Orijen.

My dog has very bad allergies and currently has some hotspots and what looks to be potential skin infections. His vet is familiar with this with him, but he has been at the vet several times in the past few months and I’d prefer not to stress him out
Hi there and thank you for using Boop by Petco to address your concern. From the pictures it appears that Dune may be dealing with a skin infection. If you are unable to get him in to be seen by the veterinarian, I would recommend the below products, which can all be found online quite easily. Do this for about 3-4 weeks and if there is no improvement, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Dune so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! These companies employ veterinary nutritionists and have above industry standards regarding quality ingredients and care to prevent contamination at their facilities. Hello. Petco carries a number of products that might help. Zymox makes a spray & a salve that contains hydrocortisone, that can really help with the itching. On-line, you can find many more products such as shampoos & conditioners that also contain hydrocortisone. Topicals only work for short periods of time. Longer relief can be obtained with immunostimulants such as Apoquel & Cytopoint, both available from your veterinarian. Your pet may also have additional issues such as skin mites, fleas, bacterial & yeast infections in the skin, & your veterinarian can certainly help to sort some of these issues out.
