The trend recently was more towards grain free foods. This was not a veterinary related trend. Now what Cardiologists are seeing is a higher number of dogs with a heart condition called Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), mainly in Golden retrievers. Many of the dogs are on a grain free diet. They are currently cautioning everyone that these diets (not all) may predispose them to DCM. We are now recommending clients away from a grain free food unless medically necessary and with the addition of supplements if needed. At that point I would recommend a nutritionist. I recommend Royal Canin to my clients, but also Science DIet, Purina Proplan, Nutro, Eukanuba and Iams. Thank you for using Boop by Petco.

Royal Canin is one of my top choices! It meets AAFCO standards, runs their own feeding trials, and have veterinary nutritionists on staff. It's one of only four brands that have all this, the others are Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I feed my dogs Iams. I think you have Chloe on an excellent food and I would not change it! Keep up the good work :-)

Both of these foods are high quality, either one would be a great choice. Royal Canin makes a food specifically for German Shepherds, so you might consider giving this a try if you're unsure which one to choose :)

As a regular food I would never recommend Royal Canin. As you pointed the ingredients are not the best, especially when compared to food such as Blue Buffalo and Orijen. Unfortunately sometimes a dog or cat need a prescription diet for a specific condition. Those conditions can greatly benefits from those special diets and Royal Canin is one of the best in that area.

Royal Canin is a great food, one of the brands I highly recommended. Take what shopkeepers say with a grain of salt, as they do not have any education or degrees in animal nutrition. It's fine to feed Bruno Royal Canin, and I recommend you do it.
