Have a spunky new rescue chihuahua mix and she is skittish. So much so she will resist any efforts to trim her nails. We have 4 dogs so I have trimmed nails hundreds of times--but with Ricki Ricardo, no luck. I sit on the floor and flip them over
Congratulations on your new dog Ricky Ricardo! In my opinion, there’s not really a superior nail trimmer but for small breed dogs, the AKC does recommend the guillotine type as compared to the scissor type. Try conditioning Ricky to have a positive association with the clippers. This can be managed with high value treats and clicker training. Basically you start by rewarding her every time she looks at the clippers (click. treat). Then you gradually bring the clippers closer and touch her with the clippers. Every time she gets a reward. Then you slowly progress to clipping 1 nail (click. treat). And so on and so forth. It may not always be easy but it’s a start and hopefully she will allow it to happen. Using a "watch me" command and a high value treat (something super delicious that Misty really enjoys, like a small amount of hot dog or cheese, that she only gets when she responds to this particular command) can be helpful in these situations See the link below for more information: https://www.embracepetinsurance.com/waterbowl/article/watch-me-command While she is learning, keep her on a training leash to help keep her safe. Don't use a retractable leash, as this could lead to injury when it retracts and does not offer you enough control.

Great question. Most dogs respond best to the family member who spends the most time doing things such as feeding, walking, bathing. It sounds like you are that person. I'm sure she loves you but your Mom may have a special bond of some kind that seems to attract you dog's attention. Continue to work on it and over time find the special things such as rubbing her ears, or massaging her back, that makes you the person she wants to be around most. Small treats can be a great motivator. She is still a young dog so plenty of time to develop that special bond between you and your dog. Best of luck. Thanks, Dr Steve Popish.

Great question! I personally recommend a high quality brand such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. I recommend these brands because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff who make sure the food is correctly formulated to meet a cat's nutritional needs. Rachel Ray is not a food I would recommend, unfortunately. She is a TV chef with absolutely no eduction or training in animal health or nutrition, so I would not feed a diet from someone who doesn't have those credentials. The brands I recommended above employ full time veterinary nutritionists on their staff, who have the eduction and training needed to correctly formulate a cat's diet. Good luck, I hope this helps!
