I have had many pet rats and I love them! They are smart and interactive! They do have some health problems though. Upper respiratory issues are very common so you will always want to use a dust free litter like Care Fresh and keep their cage SUPER clean! You also see a lot of cancer which is unfortunate. About 2 years is the average life expectancy. Make sure to get 2 or more rats of all the same sex. Females tend to be more active then males but both are sweet. Females also tend to get along a little better than the males. I approve your decision!

Thanks for reaching out about Cookie and including photos. Placing in a small cage would help prevent complications. Rear limb paresis (weakness) is not uncommon in aging rats. Providing soft substrate such as old towels/T-shirts works well. Allowing time out for exercise is still important. Anti-inflammatory medications could prevent progression of paresis, but a veterinary visit is needed to prescribe. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about your rat. Wire bars are a mild concern as their feet or legs can slip through, leading to sprain or even fractures. A solid bottom cage is preferred for rodents because of this. Good luck.

Keep a magnifying glass, scissors, tweezers, hemostats or needle-nose pliers, and a penlight in the first aid kit for removing thorns, or other foreign objects. Nail clippers and a nail file are handy as well. Also keep styptic powder or cornstarch on hand to stop bleeding from a broken or torn nail. Grease-cutting dish soap can be included in the kit to clean away oil or other debris on your rat's fur. A first aid kit should also include cotton swabs, cotton balls, cloth and paper towels, disposable gloves, lubricant jelly, and a rectal thermometer. Other things to include in your kit are a wound disinfectant such as chlorhexidine, eye wash solution, sterile saline, and ear cleaning solution. Bandaging material is important as well. The most commonly used bandaging supplies include square gauze of various sizes (sterile is best), non-stick pads, paper and adhesive first aid tapes, gauze rolls, and Vetwrap. Finally, It is important to have your veterinary clinic's phone number and di
