Hello, and thank you for your question. Possible causes of itching in hedgehogs include dry skin, mites, bacterial infection, or ringworm. I'd recommend starting with a vet exam, who may be able to help pinpoint a cause by physical exam alone. They will likely recommend a medication for mites, even if none are seen, as mites are a common cause of itching. In the meantime, you can try supplementing Gummy's diet with a bit of omega 3 oil in case dryness is involved. I'd also do a thorough clean of her cage, accessories and bedding in case of mites, although this won't be effective in itself - we'd need to treat Gummy with medication from the vet as well. I hope this helps, and that Gummy is feeling better soon!

I’m sorry to hear about your hedgehog. There is a progressive neurologic disorder in these guys called “Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome”. I am suspicious that this may be the problem. However other issues such as brain tumor, trauma, etc could be the cause as well. I would try using a dropper to drop water into his mouth to keep him hydrated until you can get him to the exotic veterinarian. I do worry that this could be a life threatening situation and the earlier you have him seen the better. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Thanks for reaching out about Butterpat. It could be the passage of an uterine plug (in young animals only), but also concerns for thick urine due to too much calcium in the diet. Do you feed green vegetables or lots of calcium powder on insects? This could be a precursor to a urinary problems. If persists, see an an appointment with a veterinarian. Good luck.

Thanks for your question about Noel, and I am sorry that she is doing this behavior! I didn’t see if she is also pooping in appropriate places in addition to the water and food, but if she isn’t, you may be able to try moving her dishes to a location where she isn’t going to the bathroom. Be sure to clean the dishes thoroughly to help to eliminate any fecal contaminants that may be present as well. You could also try to transition her to a water bottle - please continue to offer her water in a bowl until you see her using the bottle regularly so that she doesn’t become dehydrated. I also didn’t see how large of an enclosure you have her in - hedgehogs may not look athletic, but they are incredible athletes. They can run, climb, swim, and dig for hours on end. Due to this, they ideally need an enclosure that is at least 3 feet by 4 feet in size. If the enclosure is small, that may also lead to her going to the bathroom in inappropriate places. I hope that gives you a place to start,

Thank you for using Boop by Petco! You can get Lilli some huts and nesting/bedding material to hide/play in. Guinea pigs enjoy burrowing/tunneling so things like huts and pipes are fun for them. You can find plenty of options in pet stores, or make things your self out of shredded paper, toilet paper rolls, PVC pipe, etc. I hope this helps and am happy to answer any other questions you may have!
