Is Merrick dog food quality still good after Purina's acquisition?

If Rex has been doing ok on the food for a while now with no problems, then I would keep him on the same food. I would consider switching only if he begins to have problems with digestion. If you want to change food brands, I also recommend Science Diet, Royal Canin or Natural Balance. I hope this helps! My puppy has diarrhea from Merrick dog food. What should I feed him?

From your description, it sounds like the food (Merrick) may be the cause of Sal's diarrhea, especially if it clears up when you stop feeding it to him. I'd recommend switching him to another brand of dog food. If you want to feed him grain free, I recommend Acana or Orijen. Make sure he is on a puppy formulated food to meet his nutritional needs. If you want to try a food that isn't grain free, I recommend Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I hope this helps!

My favorite brands of food are Acana, Origen, Lotus and Hobest Kitchen. You can see if they are available in your area. Some of the freeze dried raw diets such as honest kitchen are very palatable to picky eaters. I also find that adding fish oil and warm water to dry kibble can be very appetizing. It is also a very healthy supplement for them.

Hello. You have quite a very handsome group of pups! The best dog foods most vets will recommend are those made by Purina, Hill's Science Diet & Royal Canin. I personally feed mine Purina One True Instincts. These may not be the very cheapest foods out there, but they are definitely more reasonable than the incredibly high priced boutique foods which are no better than the basics. What's the best wet dog food? Is Canidae a good brand choice?

Canidae is an OK brand, but seems to be more about marketing unnecessary ingredients rather than tailoring food to the dogs specific life stage. It is nutritionally adequate though, which is the most important thing. I would have to evaluate the specific product in question to have more of an opinion about it. The truth about most of these foods is that their claims usually amount to nothing more than that of a fad diet (i.e. paleo or atkins) and are not supported by sufficient evidence (even though they will make it sound like it is). As scientifically trained practitioners, us vets prefer to offer evidenced based treatment and the same goes for feeding suggestions. The most important thing on that bag is a tiny bit of writing under the guaranteed analysis called the AAFCO statement. This statement tells you what actual research went into making the product.
