My dog needs Hills UD for UTI, but it's out of stock. What do I do?
It looks like it is still available through Petsmart and Petco website for an online order, or you can wait until your vet opens on tomorrow to get it there if they keep it in stock. Typically your vet can get it ordered pretty quickly for their patients. Jaydee should be fine if it takes a week or two to get his Rx food. Visit your local pet store and get Hill's Science diet senior food (small bag) for now to hold him over.

My 9-week puppy's food has bad reviews. What food do you recommend?
Hello. Unfortunately, there has been an explosion of new & "boutique" type foods that have hit the market lately, some are fine to feed, some are just gimmicks & have no science to back up their claims. You should always look for the AAFCO statement on every label, but be aware that this is a voluntary claim & there is no regulatory agency watching out for dishonest manufacturers. Personally, I recommend sticking with the 3 biggest companies that can actually provide the science behind their pet foods. They are Science Diet, Royal Canin & Purina. All three of these have developed formulations to fit every lifestyle, every trend, & every stage of life that you just cannot go wrong feeding one. If the food you have is suspicious, I would transition Diggy off as soon as possible to another puppy food soon. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Is fall truly the worst season for pet flea infestations, and why?
Yes, in most temperate climates, fleas are at their worst [through the fall](https://www.petcoach.co/article/fall-and-fleas-what-you-need-to-know). Like all insects, fleas go through a life cycle where adult fleas lay eggs, which mature to larvae, then pupae and into adults that lay eggs of their own. None of these life stages can survive when temperatures drop below 37 degrees Fahrenheit unless they are already surviving on a host, such as a household pet or wild animal, or are already inside of a warm home. As temperatures warm up in the spring, fleas begin to boom, with adult fleas laying around 2,000 eggs over a two-month span. With consistently warm temperatures, these eggs typically mature into egg-laying adults within three weeks. Consider what happens as these 2,000 eggs mature and each lay 2,000 eggs of their own! The flea life cycle continues to boom until the temperature begins to drop by late fall, making fall the time of year where fleas have grown to the largest population size. In climates that stay above 37 degrees Fahrenheit year-round, there is no reprieve to the flea life cycle. Many pet owners lapse in their use of flea preventives in the fall, which provides fleas with an accessible and unprotected host. In all instances, it is best to keep your pet on a good-quality flea preventive medication consistently year-round. Are grains and byproducts in dog food just fillers? Is Hill's premium?
Basically, there is proponent of people in the media and in the "natural" food sector that would like to make everyone believe that grains are the devil and that dogs are wolves. This is, in fact, incorrect. Wheat and soy, grains, contain valuable nutrients including proteins that dogs can readily digest and utilize appropriately. While it is true that there are dogs that get GI upset from consumption of these, the same can be said about beef, chicken, and any other meat protein. Rice, oats, and potatoes are acceptable in small quantities, but do contain starches which are complex sugars, and are a little more difficult to digest. In terms of by-products, this is usually referring to any part of the animal that is not the flesh of the beast. Usually this includes certain organs, bones, blood, etc. These products can be ground up and made into a byproduct - meal of sorts. Obviously, the actual meat is going to contain more appropriate nutrients but if a dog were left to it, they would be happy to eat any and all pieces of an animal. As for specific brands of food, Hill's is the brand that I typically recommend to all my clients and which I feed to my own dogs and cats. I consider it to be very high quality. I can't speak much about the other brand you've named unfortunately as I have little knowledge about it. Hope this helped though!
