Hi there and thanks for posting. The Blue Buffo Brand Rx food for kidney diet has not been around for as long as some of their other competitors such as Royal Canin and Hills renal diets. From my experience, I have prescribed this to several of my renal disease patients and they have done just fine on this diet for quite a while. If the Blue Buffalo Rx is more appealing or palatable for Tony then this may be an ok option for him. I hope this helps!

Dogs and cats with diabetes should eat food with as little carbohydrates as possible. The easiest is to feed a commercial diet food for diabetic dogs, such as from Hill's or Royal Canin. I am not fon dof Blue Buffalo as I see a lot of dogs who have health problems while on Blue Buffalo brand.

You are correct that it is very hard to find a low protein dog food. Most commercial dog foods are formulated to meet the needs of an average adult dog, so they tend to have a higher amount of protein. You can find some senior diets that have lower protein amounts, but a really low protein diet is generally only available in a prescription diet. Blue Buffalo has had some recalls, but generally tries to do a good job formulating a good food. My top senior diet recommendations are Wellness and Orijen, but Orijen is not low protein. Depending on how much protein Dot is currently eating, Wellness Senior may be a good option even though if has more protein than Blue Buffalo senior. https://www.wellnesspetfood.com/natural-dog-food/product-catalog/complete-health-senior-senior Good luck! I wish I had a simple answer for you, but I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.

I would not recommend blue buffalo as I have seen some negative side effects of their urine. One of my favorite more natural foods that dogs seem to like is natural balance limited ingredient diets. They have a lot of flavors. I hope this helps.

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I am sorry to see that Boomer is in renal failure. What I typically recommend for renal failure in dogs are the following products: 1. Rehmannia 8 liquid or tablets 2. Epakitin (to help bind excessive phosphorus) 3. Renal support by Standard Process 4. Azodyl probiotic capsules (if you are not already giving these) 5. Prescription kidney diet such as Hills K/D 6. Renal K+ 7. Anti-nausea medications (Cerenia / Zofran) Some of these are more natural products and obviously the anti-nausea medications are prescription drugs but can help keep Boomer more comfortable. I also managed a kidney failure patient who also had lymphoma with all of the above including subcutaneous fluids and also treating him twice weekly in a hyperbaric chamber. His original prognosis was 3 months and that prognosis was given 15 months ago. If you have someone in your area that has a hyperbaric chamber, you can speak with them about treating Boomer with it. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
