Most of the compatible fish are schooling fish that do best in groups of 4-8. This would include Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras or White Cloud Minnows. That many fish may be too much for a 3 gallon tank. Other non-fish option include Ghost Shrimp, Zebra Snails or African Dwarf Frogs.

Maintain pristine water quality via filtration and regular partial water changes. Use only conditioned water that is temperature matched to prevent further stress or shock. Bettas do best between 78 F and 80 F. You can try an "all in one" product, such as Lifeguard by Tetra, to treat the condition. Find it in the local Petco or online. Follow label directions carefully and remove the carbon filter insert if indicated. https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/tetra-lifeguard-all-in-one-freshwater-aquarium-treatment

As long as you are properly setting up the environment for your new fish, not stressing him out too much, and making sure he is happy and healthy, he shouldn't pass away at a certain time of day. A google search can give you a myriad of information about how to care for your betta, however most do best in an actual tank with a proper filter and heater to keep things warm and fresh, a lid to keep active bettas from jumping out and becoming injured, and for males, no other bettas or aggressive fish in the tank. If you're unsure if your tank environment is safe, most pet stores will test water samples for free and point you in the direction of any changes you need to make.

Guppies or Neons are excellent "starter" fish. Care is simple and they are inexpensive. A standard 10 gallon tank is recommended to start. Most people don' t realize the amount of "work" needed to maintain a tank. Filter maintenance, monitoring water chemistry, water changes, monitoring fish health and providing a balanced diet are just a few items that need regular attention to keep a tank thriving. Even though fish aren't as cuddly as cats and dogs, they do have their own personalities and even respond to their owners, especially at feeding time! Studies have shown that simply watching fish in a tank can lead to a reduction in both heart rate and blood pressure. It is quite relaxing.
